Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing: The Elk Grove Village Owner’s Guide

Aprilaire vent sanitizing installed in Elk Grove Village typically runs $340-$520 for a whole-system treatment, and we stock the full Aprilaire-compatible product line on our trucks. CleanRun Duct Repair & Cleaning is independently owned and operated, not affiliated with Aprilaire, though we’ve specified and installed their equipment in Elk Grove Village homes since 2013. Most owners figure out something’s off when they catch a musty, almost locker-room smell right at the register every time the blower kicks on, or when someone in the house starts waking up with sinus pressure that clears up by lunch.

Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To

Aprilaire’s vent sanitizing ecosystem breaks into three product families, and getting the match wrong means you’re treating symptoms while the source keeps breeding.

The 5000 Series Electronic Air Cleaners pair with Aprilaire’s dedicated vent-sanitizing upgrade kits, model 5018 and 5020. These mount downstream of the collector cells and require a 120V dedicated circuit. Check the label inside the access door, not the front grille, for the four-digit model number ending in 5000, 5010, or 5020.

The 1000 Series Media Cleaners (1410, 1610, 2410, 2416, 3410, 4400) use a different sanitizing cartridge geometry, the 1830 series, which clips to the media cabinet rather than the duct wall. The gotcha here is depth: the 2410 and 2416 cabinets are 5 inches deep, while the 1410 and 1610 run 4 inches. The 1830 fits both, but the 1830-5 includes a spacer ring that the 4-inch cabinet doesn’t need. We’ve found the spacer discarded in Elk Grove Village basements more than once, usually after a homeowner swap that leaked treated air into the plenum.

The 2000 and 3000 Series (2210, 2216, 3210, 4200) use the 4851 vent-sanitizing module, which is OEM-only. Aftermarket equivalents exist for the 1000 and 5000 lines, but for the 2000/3000 series the control-board handshake fails with third-party boards. We stock OEM 4851 modules and the 1830 cartridges; for the 5000 series we also carry a quality aftermarket equivalent from Guardsman that meets the same UV-C output spec at roughly 30% less cost.

If your Aprilaire unit was installed before 2015, check for the old blue-label sanitizing modules, model 10-1018. Those were recalled for ozone-generation issues and should be swapped for the current 4851 or 1830 series regardless of apparent function.

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing
  • Persistent musty or sour odor at registers. The UV-C lamp in your Aprilaire sanitizing module has a rated 9,000-hour effective life, roughly 12 months of normal Chicago heating-season runtime. Once output drops below 40 microwatts per square centimeter, microbial colonies survive passage and establish biofilm downstream. In Elk Grove Village, we see this accelerated in homes near Busse Woods where the higher humidity load strains the lamp faster.
  • Visible dust accumulation on supply grille fins within two weeks of cleaning. A functioning sanitizer reduces the viable particle count enough that register dust is mostly inert fiber. When the lamp fails, living debris re-colonizes the grille almost immediately. The camera showed a 3-inch debris build-up at the first elbow in a split-level on Biesterfield last March, two weeks after the homeowner had wiped every register clean.
  • Increased HVAC runtime without temperature change. Biofilm on the evaporator coil, which the sanitizer is supposed to suppress, acts as insulation. The system runs longer to transfer the same BTUs. We measure this with a digital psychrometer; supply air at 52°F instead of 48°F at the plenum usually means coil fouling.
  • Corrosion on the aluminum housing around the lamp socket. The 4851 module’s ceramic socket can micro-crack, letting ozone and moisture wick into the housing. This isn’t cosmetic; it’s a pre-failure indicator that the electrical connection is degrading. We’ve replaced three in Elk Grove Village ranch homes built in the late 1990s, all showing the same white oxidation ring.
  • Indicator light on but no ozone or UV detectable. The LED on the 5000 series only confirms line voltage, not lamp output. A blackened lamp tube can still draw current and illuminate the status LED while producing zero sanitizing effect. The only verification is a UV-C radiometer reading at the duct surface, which we carry on every truck.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Whole-system Aprilaire vent sanitizing in Elk Grove Village runs $340-$520, depending on three factors: whether we’re retrofitting a new module or swapping a failed one, how many duct runs need direct treatment, and whether the existing wiring meets current code.

The low end covers a straightforward 1830 cartridge swap in a 1000-series cabinet with intact wiring, tested and photographed. The high end reflects a 4851 module replacement with new low-voltage control wiring, full duct-run photography, and a post-installation UV-C output reading documented in your job record. We also handle Lennox, Trane, and Carrier sanitizing systems if your setup is mixed-brand.

Every price is written and agreed before work starts, Haven Standard Clause 1. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation and the part; if the lamp fails inside 12 months, we replace it and absorb the labor. Your deliverable includes the before-and-after photo record of every treated duct run, the UV-C radiometer reading, and the written scope with Tomas Reyes’ signature.

What you can safely check: confirm the lamp indicator status, note any odors, and inspect the access door for corrosion or moisture staining. Do not remove the lamp housing cover while power is live, the 4851 module retains line voltage at the socket even when the HVAC controller is off.

Where DIY goes wrong: the 1830 cartridge clips look symmetrical but are handed left-right; forcing one backwards cracks the ceramic base. The 4851 module requires a torque-limited screwdriver to 15 inch-pounds on the mounting screws, over-torque deforms the gasket and leaks treated air into the plenum. And without a UV-C radiometer, you’re guessing whether the new lamp is actually producing spec output. We’ve been called to three Elk Grove Village homes where a homeowner-installed lamp was drawing power and glowing faintly but sanitizing nothing.

If the housing shows corrosion, the wiring is older than 2010, or you’re not certain of your model series, call (224) 344-8881. We’ll put a written number next to any competitor’s estimate under our Free Second Opinion.
